Nairy Baghramian: Déformation Professionnelle
  • All Day Event   Ical event icon
  • This exhibition is the first international museum presentation of the work of sculptor Nairy Baghramian (b. 1971, Iran; lives and works in Berlin). Baghramian explores and reflects on the legacy and languages of both modernism and Post-Minimalism, which she simultaneously pays homage to and disrupts. Over the past two decades, the artist has become known for her reflection on Minimalism and contextual approaches to exhibition making via sculpture and site-responsive installations that play off the body and its gestures. Her work marks boundaries, transitions, and gaps in the museum and the urban space, referencing interior and exterior, fashion and design, theater and dance, form and meaning, context and discourse. Using such materials as curved steel sheets and soft rubber, geometric frameworks and hybrid objects, plastics, waxes, and fabrics as well as cast or combined elements and photography, the artist challenges and questions the definition of sculpture. In doing so, she exposes the context of her exhibitions, making this tension inseparable from her artistic production. The exhibition features a series of new pieces that mirror or play off of the artist’s previous bodies of work while responding directly to the site, creating a new model of what a retrospective can be and allowing the installation to evolve in real time and space. Taking its title from a French phrase that indicates an adjustment made to one’s worldview from being overly specialized or made expert, the exhibition also speaks to the process of taking apart or making transparent one’s profession—in this case, the laying bare of the sculptor’s method. Through her playful take on the retrospective gaze, Baghramian unpacks and interrogates the conceptual, physical, and social aspects of sculpture. Nairy Baghramian: Déformation Professionnelle is accompanied by a major publication, the first comprehensive monograph on the artist’s work to date. • A timeless tale of star-crossed lovers
    by William Shakespeare
    directed by Joseph Haj
    September 9 – October 28, 2017
    Wurtele Thrust Stage
It’s a story so well-known it scarcely needs an introduction, yet surprisingly the Guthrie has produced it just twice before. Set in Verona, where the rival houses of Capulet and Montague have had a long-standing feud, Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s famous tragedy of star-crossed lovers, filled with all the passion of young love. Underscored by ingenious wit and astonishing beauty, the play pits the bitterness of resentment against the intensity of romance.

Hurricane Irma Meal Pack with Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr.
  • Thursday, 12:00pm CDT-2:00pm CDT   Ical event icon
  • In the wake of Hurricane Irma, co-owners Richard Erickson and Lowell Picket have organized a meal pack in order to contribute to the wider effort providing relief to those whose lives have been shaken by this natural disaster. On Thursday September 14th, Dakota will be hosting a meal pack in partnership with Harvest Pack. We invite anyone who wants to join us to volunteer starting at noon, packing 15,000 meals to be shipped to the Bread of the Mighty Food Bank. Bread of the Mighty serves a five county area in Florida: Alachua, Dixie, Gilchrist, Lafayette and Levy. The pack is expected to last for about two hours, but volunteers can stay for as long or as little as they’d like. Come for your lunch hour or stay the whole time – whatever works! We will be joined by singer and winner of America’s Got Talent Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., who will be performing Thursday evening at 7pm. Landau and his band will be working alongside the volunteers, packing meals for the relief effort. Everyone who volunteers will be offered a 20% discount on tickets to Landau’s performance. Additional donations made that day will also be given to the Bread of the Mighty Food Bank donation. The following is a statement from Landau’s team: Landau Eugene Murphy Jr, the Columbia Records artist and season six winner of NBC TV’s “America’s Got Talent” will be participating in the event prior to his concert this Thursday night and says he’s honored to participate. “My band and I really appreciate Dakota Jazz Club and Harvest Pack for giving us the chance to roll up our sleeves and pitch in to help. When disasters like this happen, sometimes you feel like there’s nothing you can do, so we’re grateful for the opportunity to do our small part.”   Landau just returned last week from driving 46 hours round trip with the Cora West Virginia Fire Department to deliver a trailer full of emergency supplies to the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Since winning AGT in 2011, he’s helped raise well over a million dollars for a variety of charities benefitting children, the elderly, homeless and disaster relief efforts.

Romeo & Juliet
  • Friday, 7:30pm CDT-10:00pm CDT   Ical event icon
