Downtown Fast Facts

  1. The Minneapolis Skyway system was the first and still the most extensive continuous network of climate-controlled walkways in the country. It spans over eight miles, accommodating 200,000+ pedestrians every day and making it possible to walk from Target Field to U.S. Bank Stadium or from the Minneapolis Convention Center to within blocks of the Mississippi Riverfront.
  2. Minneapolis is second only to New York City in live theater per capita.
  3. Three professional sports facilities: Target Field, Target Center and U.S. Bank Stadium.
  4. Four professional sports teams call downtown home: MLB's Twins, the NFL's Vikings, the NBA's Timberwolves and the three-time WNBA Champion Lynx.  
  5. Five Fortune 500 Companies are headquartered in Minneapolis: Target, U.S. Bancorp, Xcel Energy, Ameriprise Financial and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. 
  6. Nicollet Mall is a pedestrian focused roadway spanning 12 blocks through the core of downtown. It is currently undergoing a $50 million renovation that will enhance the pedestrian experience along the mall, add significant greening, provide more entertainment options and maintain Nicollet as a must-see destination 
  7. Downtown Minneapolis' residential population has grown by 25.2 percent over the past 10 years and currently sits at 39,960.
  8. All of downtown's Top 15 Employers have at least 1,000 employees.
  9. Metro Transit's ridership topped 85.5 million in 2015, including 12.3 million on the Green Line LRT and 10.6 million on the Blue Line LRT. There are 6,000 unique boardings alone at the Nicollet Mall light rail station each day.
  10. Downtown's Central Business District accounts for 36.29 percent of the entire Twin Cities' office space.
  11. Minneapolis SafeZone Collaborative's Downtown Camera Registry assisted in 181 investigations in 2015, while RadioLINK had 5,475 collaborative communications.
  12. There was a 72 percent reduction in crime by Downtown 100 Chronic Offenders in 2015. In all six years of the Downtown 100's existence there has been at least a 70 percent reduction.
