Mpls DID President & CEO Steve Cramer stands alongside MDID Ambassadors, public officials, law enforcement and community outreach partners in April during the launch of the Commuter Block Post initiative at City Center.

NEW SAFETY AND ACTIVATION INITIATIVES

The Mpls Downtown Improvement District is partnering with the City of Minneapolis, local law enforcement, public officials and community outreach teams to provide enhanced safety initiatives and an increased street presence throughout 2017. This year the summer safety initiatives started in early April and extend to October adding 4 months from prior years. Several new programs were launched:

  • Hennepin Commuter Block Posts

A new partnership between MDID and the Minneapolis Police Department adds an MPD officer or a MDID Ambassador “posting up” on alternating blocks between 5th and 10th streets from 6:30-9:30 am and from 3:00-6:00 pm.  This initiative is funded by the city.

  • New Incident management system

ISS 247 is an incident management and dispatch system between the Safety Communication Center and downtown street outreach organizations that will help us better coordinate work and reduce response times.

  • Efforts to promote positive activity on the streets

MDID is involved with several programs this summer designed to increase safety and promote positive behavior including:

  • Supporting youth activities at a former bus shelter at 3rd street
  • Working with Metro Transit to test pop-up performances at the 7th and Hennepin bus stop
  • Bringing back the popular Pianos on Parade produced by mdc and MDID
  • Supporting Hennepin Theatre Trust's 5 to 10 program
  • The Nightlife Alliance

This group of downtown night clubs and bars have been convened to increase communication and coordination in order to improve late night safety outcomes. Since March, the venues have joined the MDID Safety Communications Center in sharing a radio communications channel that enables them to coordinate and respond to active situations in real time.

We are pleased to do our part to improve downtown safety in partnership with the mpls downtown council, the City of Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Regional Chamber and BOMA Greater Minneapolis.
